Where to buy goldAll that glisters is not gold. You have to know where to shop or your '23 karat' gold necklace may turn black after a couple of years.... There are gold shops on just about every street corner in Thailand. Thais use gold, in part, as an investment in place of cash. With so many shops and so much buying and selling of gold you might expect that the Thais would gold experts. This is not the case. Not all gold shops are trustworthy either. They will sometimes put their own mark on gold they buy from the factory. However this does not mean that they have actually made it themselves. For this reason it is best to stick to the 4 main gold shop chains where you can be confident about what you are buying. These are:
These shops are all Chinese owned and all
located in Chinatown in Bangkok (Yaowarat). Unfortunately, locating them is
quite difficult and means fighting your
way through heavy traffic jams and pollution. The shops close at
unpredictable times and the staff are not especially
friendly or helpful regardless of how much money you are spending. There are often large queues in front of the shops so there is pressure on
you not to waste time. Exporting Thai goldTo export gold bullion you need a export license but you can export gold jewelry; there is an export ban on antiques and buddha images. If you decide to sell your gold jewelry, providing that you buy good quality gold from someone trustworthy, you may make a good profit. In the worst case you will get back the spot price which, as pointed out earlier, is about what you paid for it. |
